Sri Lanka Import Tariff Guide
Customs Duty (CD)
The main import tax applied to goods entering Sri Lanka. Rates vary by product category, typically ranging from 0% to 30%, based on the HS code classification.
Value Added Tax (VAT)
VAT of 18% is applied on most imported goods in Sri Lanka, calculated on the CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight) plus the Customs Duty.
PAL (Ports and Airports Development Levy)
PAL is charged at 10% on the CIF value of most imports. Certain essential goods and raw materials may be exempt.
NBT (Nation Building Tax)
NBT was a tax previously applied to imports in Sri Lanka. Note: NBT was abolished in December 2019 and is no longer applicable.
CESS
An additional levy applied to selected imported goods to protect local industries. Rates vary depending on the product.
Excise Duty
Applied to specific goods such as alcohol, tobacco, and motor vehicles. Rates are set by the Department of Excise.
